It believes providing freedom only in the schools in the requirement. This is only helping is creating undisciplined children in schools and colleges.

The early parts of this generation have already started influencing politics, with a greater focus on scientific research and less worrying about political differences. Fortunately, we are just scratching the surface of the Generation X political movement.

As the later members of this generation—late 1970s and early 1980s—things will begin to change. Many outdated and archaic laws will be stricken from the books. The real question is, can this generation turn the economy around? Will the pot smoking, television addicted generation be able to run the U.S. Government?

The answer is yes to both questions. This generation is a more free thinking generation than the baby boomers. They tend to rely more on scientific fact and research than the previous generation. This is only going to get more intense as we get later into generation X.  We will see more technological movement than we ever have and this new generation is more eco-friendly than ever. So we may actually see a greatly improved earth and less of a dependence on fossil fuels.

Many older generations are probably shaking as they think about us “Legalizing It.” That, however, has fallen by the wayside in favor of another green, the plant! If anyone is going to turn this around it is Generation X. We have seen about enough of stuffy politicians saying whatever they need to get into office and never living up to their promises.

These young politicians still have about 10 years before they become the majority, but hopefully they hold true to their roots and demand change in an increasingly corrupted field.

Democrats:

Barack Obama is of course an option to run for reelection in 2012. His approval rating has shot up recently, with some showing it over 50%. He took over a mess and a lot of U.S. Citizens are starting to see that most of the problems are not from his policies. The unemployment rate began dropping in December 2010, falling nearly 0.5%. Not much, but an improvement. The other thing is that a Presidents’ policies usually do not show effect for about four years.

Hillary Clinton is the other legitimate competition for the Democratic nomination. She once rode the coattail of Bill, but has really shown that she is a political force. If Obama declines to run in 2012, look for Clinton to come out as the Democratic nominee.

Republican:

Newt Gingrich has come forward as a potential—and most likely–Republican candidate. The former speaker of the house has a long resume in politics, dating back to 1979 as a member of the House of Representatives.

Sarah Palin will again toss her name in the republican bucket. She is a long shot to make it as a nominee, mostly due to her extreme tactics and frequent bad press. Her affiliation with the Tea party is another downfall for her.

Independent:

While the Independent party is typically a second though, we may have our most influential and qualified Independent candidate since Ross Perot. Charley Crist, the current Governor of Florida has done wonders for the state he governs. He has lowered taxes and addressed the state’s high property tax rate. He has also created a healthcare plan that offered insurance to thousands of uninsured Floridians.

Unaffiliated:

The second largest “religion” consists of those that are unaffiliated with any religion. This group makes up 16.1% of the U.S. population. This includes Atheists, Agnostics and those that just choose not to practice religion. This is by far the most likely of alternative religions to make it into the White House, mostly based on gross numbers and its acceptance by Generation X and Y.

Jewish:

Judaism is the third largest religion after Christianity at about 4.7% of the U.S. population. Simply because it is the third largest, and readily accepted, it is most likely that a Jewish president would be likely.

Buddhist:

Buddhism is a religion of peace and may be a great influence on the country, but do not hold your breath waiting for one. The Buddhist religion makes up only 0.7% of the U.S. population. With numbers that low, it is unlikely a potential President is in the works. It is possible, just unlikely.

Islam:

The religion of Islam, whose followers are called Muslims, is the wildcard of the race to change the White House’s religion. Islam is growing fast throughout the world and is the second largest in the world. Islam is—to some people’s surprise—much like Christianity, so it wouldn’t be a huge change in the personality of the White House. However, since 9/11 and people incorrectly tabbing all Muslims as terrorists, it is unlikely to see this. Also, the number do not add up, as they only make up 0.6% of the United States’ population.

One problem that people keep pointing to was the slip-up by Michelle Obama, when she called Kenya his “Home Country.” Many people read way too much into this. It is not uncommon for people to call their father’s home country their home country. Also, if someone is a descendant of a country they may call it their “Home Country” as many African Americans call Africa their “Home Country.”

Another huge flaw in everyone’s argument is that no matter where Barack Obama was born, he had rights to U.S. Citizenship. Per INA Section 301(g), Barack’s Mother—a U.S. Citizen—could have easily transferred her citizenship to him. The law stipulates, in layman’s terms, anyone born outside of the U.S. after December 24, 1952—Obama was born in 1961—which one parent holds U.S. Citizenship, is eligible for U.S. Citizenship. There are some other small stipulations about residency times, but Barack’s Mother had qualified residency. Anyone with transferred residency has all of the rights of a naturally born citizen, including the Presidency.

All that being said, it is about time to put this argument to bed. No matter the specifics of his birth, he is a U.S. Citizen and is entitled to the Presidency. There is a chance the he was born in Kenya, but his birth certificate would indeed say Hawaii, because that was his Mother’s place of residency in the U.S. So can we stop begging for his private information now? There is no longer a point.

It seems as the years go by that the majority of political campaigning more and more focused on the negative. Of course there are candidates that don’t fall into this category but they seem to be few. What might help is to find out which candidates are willing to work beyond the just being the political parties.

A movement has begun that could help change the way campaigning is done. According to their website, No Labels, will host their official launch on December 13th. The launch will be spurred by a live webcast of a panel of congressman, governors, and others listed on the No Labels website. The panel will be addressing questions submitted by the public.

It really is time that we as Americans stopped fighting over whether we are Republican, Democrat, or Independent. History reveals Americans as problem solvers and community members that band together to protect one another and fight together for the benefit of the people. A quote from the constitution might sound inspirational here, but let’s go further. We, the American society have problems that must be solved for our way of life to continue. Our economy feels fragile and too many people are looking for work and can’t find it. Forget the label of Democrat, Republican or Independent. Let’s solve our mutual problem.

Currently, legislation is in Congress to repeal the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. Gridlock between parties seems to be stalling the repeal there. It appears that we Americans always want to leave someone out. We are slow to accept people based on some characteristic that we deem unacceptable or an interruption to success. It raises a number of questions:

-What damage could be done if homosexuals are already in the military?
-What will it take for Americans, as a whole, to accept all people, regardless?
-Why stop any patriot, fully capable and qualified to serve in the military?
-Will we ever truly have equal rights in this country for all?

Currently the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, has asked Congress to pass legislation to change this policy. The fear appears to be that if Congress doesn’t do it, the courts will. It appears Americans may end up being forced to accept the reality. The reality is that homosexuals already serve in the military. The reality is that homosexuals are part of our society. As a member of the public in America, we live our lives along side all types of people. We live with men and woman, of many races, disabled people, and gay and lesbian. Why do we continue to label and group everyone based on some external quality or characteristic?

The focus on ecology is to ensure that our environment is protected. This including the land that we live on and sustains us, the air that we breath and the water that supports us all. The party focuses on electing officials and enacting laws that continues to support the species of the planet, including the human race. This is important in a growing industrial nation where success is measured by dollars instead of a healthy and happy society.

Social Justice is also important to the Green Party. The list is long of persons in America that need protection and justice or an equal chance in a discriminating society. Included in the focus are woman’s rights, social equality, reproductive rights, economic equality, sexual orientation, rights of the disabled, and the list continues. There seems to be no shortage of persons who are forgotten in the American society.

The word grassroots develops interesting images but the concept is simple. Grassroots democracy is a political group composed of individuals in the society. It is not an organization backed by corporate sponsorship, of which the green party is opposed. Everyone deserves a voice.

Another focus is non violence, which simply refers to attaining goals without hurting others. If it hurts others, how can we really see it as a positive outcome?

Recent action by the Green Party other than activity in recent elections was attending the 16th session of the Conference of Parties, a meeting to discuss Global warming and possible actions. The Green Party is also reported to actively oppose President Obama’s interest in cutbacks to Medicare and Social Security.

According to a news briefing held by both President Obama and former President Clinton at the White House on December 10, 2010, the agreement with Republicans includes much more than just a continuation of the current tax cuts put into place by former President Bush. Also included is a middle class tax cut, tax credits for college students, a child tax credit, a credit for manufacturing companies in the energy market and the extension of unemployment insurance.

Although he does not agree with the continuation of tax cuts alone, Former President Clinton agrees that this a good plan. He also stated that for Democrats that don’t think it is a good deal, that it is important to remember that there will be less interest from the Republican party to continue unemployment benefits after the new Congress is seated next year.

It seems one political party or the other is ready to stop any solution to the American economic instability. Learning to get along and be reasonable is something kids are supposed to learn in grade school. It seems that making the concessions and finding an agreement is the solution. Immediate action is the only way to help the economy and is of importance to everyone in the country. The unemployed have bills to pay as well and with out a job opportunity, what option are we leaving them?

It is important to understand there is a difference between the national debt and the national deficit. Stated on the U.S. National Debt Clock the debt is bills that have gone unpaid and the deficit is the difference in what the nation is currently spending and what taxes are being collected. So it is important to see the difference. When government officials talk about reducing the deficit they are only referring to reducing our accumulated debt, not reducing our actual debt. According to the debt clock on December 13, 2010, the current debt per tax payer is over $125,000 and that is climbing.

Something has to change. Everything one learns in economics is that paying interest and accumulating debt will catch up with you one day. Americans are born into this world in debt. Honestly, this is no way to treat or teach our children the importance of responsibility.

The United States government continues to fight costly wars overseas and it appears we will continue tax cuts that helped cause the national debt to rise since the most recent Bush administration. Of course, a functional economy is important and that is a tough decision for the current administration and Congress. No private individual would be lawfully allowed to carry debt like our government continues to do.

According to a statement from Republican National Chairman, Michael Steele the Republican position is that the reform of health care passed this year was “unpopular” and a “2.5 trillion dollar mistake”. With a position like this it seems the Republican lead House will require attempts to repeal the reforms. Meanwhile the White House attempts to remind the American people about the positive aspects of the reform, included on the White House website. According to former President Clinton, in a recent White House press briefing, the health care reforms are worth fighting for if Republicans attempt repeal.

For the American there seems to be interest that health care costs are brought to an affordable level. Because of the high cost of care and insurance, care is out of reach for too many people. It seems reasonable that if one needs care they should be able to see a doctor. Why would anyone fight against any legislation that would make this a possibility?

The second part of the requirement to reform is Access. Currently, this is very closely related to bringing down costs because that is the factor limiting access for those that aren’t receiving care. Under current standards those without insurance pay the full bill. A full bill that is often a larger amount than what is charged to an insurance company that may have bargained for a lower rate. It appears there are discrepancies in the equality of American people. Those that can’t afford insurance end up paying a higher bill that they couldn’t pay anyway. It seems reform remains a requirement not an option.

India is quickly becoming one of the top economic powerhouses in the world. Established global businesses are seeing the potential that India has, and they’re trying to capitalize on it.

While it might appear to an outsider that it would be a strange move to expand in India, there are hundreds of companies that are already making the move and are investing in India. India has a massive population that is eager to take part in anything that is a part of western culture, including businesses. There is also an immense amount of wealth and money in the country. While there are many poorer areas in India, there are just as many wealthy areas that are looking to invest in the Indian economy.

Companies can take advantage of the Indian economic boom in one of two ways. The first way is to undertake physical expansion into India. This usually involves building a headquarters in India and opening up locations throughout the country. The second way that companies can take advantage of this economic boom is through outsourcing or hiring overseas. Both ways have been popular among established western companies.

While there might not appear to be a need for a 21st Century Insurance branch in India, the expansion possibilities are limitless, and you never know what companies might appear in this country!

President Obama says it is the responsibility of the United States government and he wants Arizona to drop efforts to try and control the flow of illegals across American borders. The federal government has filed a lawsuit against the state over a controversial law that requires local police to make inquiries about immigration status when they suspect that someone they have arrested may be in the country illegally. Despite the lawsuit, Arizona shows no indication that it will back down. The governor says since lawmakers in Washington are not addressing the problem, they have to.

The lawsuit alleges that the state of Arizona has violated the constitution in passing a law that is clearly out of their jurisdiction. Latino groups across America are applauding the move by the federal government because they believe that the Arizona law will lead to harassment of all Latinos, even those who have entered the United States legally.

The President agrees that immigration reform is needed in the United States but he says it is up to the Congress to approve any changes not individual states. The debate over what to do about illegals living in America has been a source of a great deal of controversy because most of the proposals have included some type of amnesty plan. While many believe that the illegals here should be given a chance to become American citizens others argue that is not fair to all the people who played by the rules and followed the law in entering the U.S.

The longer the debate drags on without any solution to the problem, the more frustrated states like Arizona become trying to deal with large numbers of illegals. If Congress continues to block efforts at reform, reports say the President may act on his own. White House lawyers are reportedly studying the legality of issuing an executive order granting amnesty to illegals.

In the current economic climate, more and more charitable organizations are finding that their funds are dwindling as people’s ability to donate time and money to good causes decreases. In the post credit crunch world, spare time that might previously have been spent volunteering or fundraising is now spent working at second jobs and attempting to cover household costs in lower income families. Even the middle classes are tightening their belts in order to minimize the effects of the recession.

However, in some circles the pressure to be seen to give remains. Whether it be a sly sideways glance along the pew when the collection plate is passed on Sunday or comments made by ladies who lunch as they attempt to continue to appear benevolent in the face of their peers.

Certainly there is an argument that if someone can continue to carry out their Christmas shopping at Aaron Basha then they must be able to find a way to continue to support charitable causes. So is giving simply to be seen to be giving a bad thing? If we break it down, then end result is the same, the good causes get the donations that they deserve – and to raise the money they need to carry out essential works.

If people are giving simply in order to be seen to give, then the giving is nonetheless a valid action. It is only their own motivation that is at question. The issue of charity for charity’s sake is one that can continue to be debated as long as the donations keep rolling in.

Of course, in an ideal world the act of donating time and money to the support of causes would be one that is selfless and without guile or ulterior motivation. However, the likelihood of this state of affairs ever being achieved is minimal, regardless of the recession.

Currently at the Wikileaks website, one is redirected to a mirror site that hosts the content of Wikileaks. The front page of the Wikileaks website, along with quotes and and simple text format is the statement, “We are of assistance to peoples of all countries who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their governments and institutions. We aim for maximum political impact.” The question remains whether releasing documents previously not released to the public will fulfill this aim. It also remains to be seen, whether the release of these documents will end with possible harm to individuals or other entities. What happened to discretion and the aim to help people and to do so in a direct way. Indiscriminately releasing information may not come close to this effect?

According to Merriam-Websters Dictionary transparency refers in part to helping someone better understand something. It is not apparent that the release of censored or classified documents will ever achieve the goal. The newly created website Openleaks, does not appear to have any content other than a message “Coming Soon” at this point. Is leaking documents to the public the path to transparency? It may lead to government officials becoming more careful in what they say, it may even lead to stronger security over classified documents, but greater transparency is questionable.

The U.S. Press Secretary made a statement a couple of weeks ago condemning the recent release of documents by Wikileaks. He also stated the risks outweigh the interest of the possible support to transparency in the government.

The bill, now a signed Act was created with the great efforts of both the President and the First Lady because school lunches should be available to all kids and they haven’t been. According to President Obama the act will make it possible for 115,000 kids to get school lunches that previous did not. The fact that there are at least that many kids in this country that don’t get a reasonable lunch is scary. It is easy to see the need for an Act such as the Healthy, Hungry Free Kids Act.

The act doesn’t stop at just making meals more available but also focuses efforts on the nutritional content of the meals that are available. The President also commented on how the Act will connect schools with local farmers and that the funding for the Act will come from a rollback of the SNAP food stamp temporary increase. In this era where the deficit is large and the national debt continues to grow everyday, it’s important to find ways to pay for programs without increasing spending. Although it is concerning to have money taken from food stamp programs, at least it is directed to another food program that will ensure kids are getting fed. Feeding our next generations is an important cause, with out healthy kids, it is hard to imagine strong leaders of the future.

President Obama talked about a history of negative treatment of these peoples and how much work still needed to be done. In each of the settlements billions of dollars will be paid, some of it in connection with water rights for Native Americans in Montana, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Continuing to change a society that has had a basis in discrimination of both Native Americans and African Americans is no easy task. Of course, settling lawsuits and admitting that past actions are wrong is a start, but changing minds that have been instilled with prejudice takes education. Much has changed over the past century in the way of laws. Segregation in most places seems to be history, but it’s not hard on any given day to walk down the street and observe some form of prejudice or discrimination. There are still those that are unwilling to interact with African Americans because of some view that there is really a difference between a person of color and a caucasian. Intelligence is not measured by ethnic origin. Whether a person is friendly, helpful, capable of understanding does not change with skin color any more than it does with a persons height or birth weight.

The Claims Resolution Act of 2010 is a fine step in a process of righting wrongs of the past. And it is possible it will aid in a movement of change in this country. We all need to continue to learn, that is where real understanding is found.

A basic logical stance is to say that all Americans should have access to health care when they need it. It seems most people would agree with this. This basic platform is the reason for a national health care plan. What many people may not be aware of yet, is that equality does not exist in the United States. And what this means is that not all people are born with the same opportunities as everyone else. Argue this point, but even this week action was taken to pass the Claims Resolution Act of 2010 because of discrimination by the United States Department of Agriculture.

For a variety of reasons many millions of Americans can’t afford health insurance and therefore health care is out of reach for them. Simple illnesses and problems go undiagnosed and untreated leading sometimes to serious and life threatening situations. If health care was available to everyone the possibility of treatment, at an early stage, at a preventable stage would exist for everyone. With this the cost would be less and the population possibly healthier.

There is a clear and present need that the cost of health insurance to be at a level that everyone could afford. One part of lowering this cost is logically to increase the number of people paying into the plan. The bigger part of this is to decrease the cost for each person by increasing the health of the population. We have incredible capabilities in this country to care for those that need it, it should be available to everyone.

As Americans live longer, the strain on Social Security is getting worse. All experts agree that the fund will not be able to cover future payments to retirees without some major changes but how to reform the system is a subject of great debate. The latest suggestion comes from the Republican leader in the House of Representatives, John Boehner. The Congressman from Ohio created a firestorm when he suggested that the retirement age be pushed back to 70.

Under the current law, people can start collecting benefits from Social Security at the age of 62. These are only partial payments however, to claim full benefits you must wait until you turn 67. By pushing the date for full benefits back to 70, the fund could save billions of dollars and remain solvent well into the future. People close to retirement understandably object to any change since they were hoping to be able to retire soon. That is why Boehner has proposed making the change effective only for people who are currently 50 or younger.

Since Americans are living longer and are more healthy than ever before, supporters say the change makes perfect sense. The average man in the United States can now expect to live to be 77 while the average woman has a life expectancy of 82. When the retirement rules were first adopted 50 years ago, life expectancies were much shorter. Critics say retirees should be able to enjoy their longer golden years instead of having to fill more of them with work. Unions are at the forefront of the fight saying it just is not practical for many of their members who do tough manual labor to keep working until they turn 70. They also point out that workers pay their own money into the Social Security System so that they can access the funds when they are ready to quit working.

In the United States we call them senior citizens, a term that doesn’t often reflect what the term suggests. The term suggests that these citizens are senior, in many other parts of society to refer to someone this way is to refer to them as near the top of the hierarchy. Too often in our society senior citizens are just referred to as old people, a burden to be dealt with instead of an important contributor of wisdom in our society.

As of late 2010, in the United States, senior citizens have not received a cost of living increase in 2 years. A recent attempt to give seniors a 250 dollar stipend was rejected. It doesn’t appear these important contributors are getting needed help in these hours of economic hardship.

We must remember that we too will be senior citizens, for some of us this is not too far into the future. Will the economy turn around? Will we all be dependent someday on the hopes for a 250 dollar stipend? It seems important that we teach our children what is important. Today, it appears we are teaching our children that taking good care of our elders is not the top priority. If our elders can’t fend for themselves, well, then it isn’t societies job to care for them. We all should be aware of the message we are sending. Senior citizens as we call them, built this country and provided us with the means to continue creating. we should honor that better than we have and better than we think we can.

Martin Luther King Jr., leader in the civil rights movement in the United States, arguably he motivated and inspired an entire nation to begin changing discrimination and segregation. The Apollo 8 astronauts that landed on the moon. This list and description of people that were also given the title of Person of the Year have influenced and created undeniable change in the hearts and minds of people all over the world. Is it true, that a the creation of Facebook, should stand next to these names and the names of other Presidents and leaders across the globe.

The truth is that large numbers of people in the United States and other countries use facebook, but we are far from a majority of people. It is also hard to say, how many of the users of Facebook actually use it on a regular basis. It is definitely a changing society and computers and the internet is changing the way that people do business. It seems difficult and inappropriate that this change should boil down to the creation of one website, and specifically the founder of that website. Others will disagree, and time will tell what will come of Social Networking.

Income tax, and what is going to happen over the next few years to the tax breaks, is a huge thing in both politics and the media. Some people are concerned that we will lose the tax breaks that have been prevalent in the last few years. Others fear that not only will tax breaks lessen, but taxes themselves will increase.

Realistically, what many people do not understand is that the tax breaks that are being discussed currently will most likely not effect them. Most of the tax cuts that are currently in place, that are being talked about the most, only effect the top few percentile points of the country. When talking about reducing the tax breaks, it is usually only those that make well over $250,000 a year. In fact, when President Obama has discussed raising taxes, it has only been on those in the wealthiest tax brackets.

What this means is that for the majority of people in the United States, nothing will change. This is a huge relief for many who are considered middle class or lower. Many times in the media, when these tax cut repeals are talked about, or tax hikes are discussed, it is not made clear that this would only affect for those in the higher tax brackets. When these things are gone over in the media, it almost seems like a way to boost ratings, by scaring those in the lower tax brackets.

Income tax breaks and current tax rates for most people in the country will not change, even if there are repeals of some of the current tax cuts. Understanding exactly what is being said, instead of going along with what others think is crucial to understanding what is going on in our government.

A lot has changed the way Washington does business with the world. From the ever burgeoning number of business transactions that keep going on in Washington, it seems that the whole country is preoccupied with money.

The entire system has become money centric and made it their predominant activity to obtain money. The effects of this are pernicious on the running of a government. It does not matter what position you hold, it is ultimately the power of money that determines you position and strength. Hence obtaining money from anywhere in the preeminent goal of every one. Many of the issues and bills raised are decided on the economical advantages it has to the one with the power and the one with the money. Employment in white house is now based on the bank balances and not experience. Values have been subverted leading to the complete transformation of politics. People are resorting to acts that are unethical and morally unreasonable. Public service has become as cover for open purse stashing. Many administrative and legislative outcomes are now based on the interests of large corporations rather than the interests of the public. This is the only time h political money is playing a universal role in getting work done at the highest levels with little difficulty and little resistance. Washington has become a place for people to look forward to benefit from government service for just shutting up instead of what used to pull people to Washington before; the deep love for the country and its idealism. Lobbying has seen an drastic rise in the recent years. Hiring ex congress members as lobbyists is seen as a way to attract the favor of congress towards their interests by corporations. No matter what is done to make the illegal transactions, new ways will be invented to carry out the same.

Have you ever cursed immigrants for taking the jobs meant for you? If yes then you are wrong. A recent research done by economists has provided enough evidence that immigrants no matter if legal or not, do not steal jobs from U.S citizens. This is a reason that immigrants are being denied permission to work in America i.e also known as denying any chance for citizenship. There are hardly any figures available to prove that if immigrants have any effect on American jobs. Every study done since 1995 has proved that the arrival of immigrants has only helped in increasing the size of the economy, expanding the size of markets which has led to the creation of more jobs. They also have helped the Americans be more competitive in the face of increasing scarcity of jobs. But every American has got a job which he deserved and has not been chosen over an immigrant because of his citizenship. It is agreed though that immigrants push down the average annual salaries, leading the same to American citizens working for the same am amounts as immigrants have been. The increasingly strict immigrant laws in the state of Arizona are a proof of the prejudice against immigrants. The thought needs to be taken out of the American minds that the immigrants are taking their jobs, because they are not. The increasing hatred to immigration by foreigner is causing many immigrants to return home, leaving their jobs without an equivalent replacement. The republicans are vying for reforms in immigration rules and are criticizing the democrats for letting more immigrant to enter when the current unemployment rate is considerably high. But what ever the case, the immigrants are not causing any harm to the US economy, remember these are the same immigrants that buy US products back home and send the money back to US.

The republicans are working on making social security numbers private. This is considered to be on the top of their to do lists and will be carried out if they succeed during this midterm elections. Obama himself claimed this and it is considered to be part of their legislative agenda. This has been on their agenda since bush ruled in 2005. If social security is privatized, it will lead to new reforms in handling taxes. Thou the push bu bush had little support in 2005 because of inability to privatize social security at that time. Hence it was never made into a formal legislation. They will go on with using social security numbers for private accounts once this privatizations complete and will bring about more transparency to the taxing and banking sector. This is what Obama does not want, he is against privatization to protect people from various GOP leaders. This he argues that they will tie up social security number to the fluctuating Wall Street markets. This is being used by the democrats to keep the flow of public’s interest in their direction since they argue that these are worthless reforms that will only be a hindrance to the public. This is identical to what is being done in Chile where the social security is put completely into private financial institutions. This is known as a fully privatized system, but not exactly what the republicans are supporting in America. What is actually being done is only part of what Chile has done. Thou the use of private next to social security is like misleading the public since adding the word private adds only distrust among the people. Hence it is safer than what democrats want us to believe and will help the government is collecting taxes and other things.

The democrats passed stimulus packages also known as American recovery and Reinvestment act that have become of favorite target candidates of the republican party. It is safe to say that the stimulus package worked billions of dollars failed to create any jobs any where in the United States. The republicans have been targeting these ineffective packages passed to create the jobs an ad is various sectors of the economy. And unemployment level are at they are highest levels after the recession and the stimulus packages have not been able to create any jobs whatsoever. But the truth is the stimulus packages have been include to create between 1.4 million jobs to about 3.3 million people in United States this was declared by the budget office of the congress. Thou the republican candidates have a lot of things to criticize the government for, this is the most painful thing since it is close to the stomach of the public. The declaration about this bill completely failed to do its dedicated purposes is an exaggeration since it helped create some valuable jobs that have brought the stimulus money back into the society. This has been instrumental in pulling America out of the recession. The current unemployment rate is about 9% from a high of 11% during the peak of recession. There have also been reports of the unemployment level being temporary since most of jobs have been in the government sector and under temporary. But what ever the case, it has given something to the republicans to whine about when the mid term elections are going on. It is only upto the republicans to create new stimulus packages that will actually bring unemployment back to pre recession levels. But there is nothing more the government can do other than what democrats did.

The democrats are doing it again, their allies are doing it again. The democrats are misusing the tax pledge along with their allies. The republicans are being targeted have with the bogus charge about falsely equating the tax and the various loopholes. Companies that outsource jobs overseas have found a loophole in the system where they do not need to declare earning from the outsourced business. The republicans urge that the democrats are favouring these loopholes for a few percentages of the tax savings. They hope to keep these loopholes available and no plans of patching them up are bring planned. It has been the republican target to destroy the reputation of the democrats in the public eyes. May be this is the reason why Obama recently passed a bill in Ohio to stop companies from outsourcing work to destinations such as India and China. As usual some greedy politicians stopped this bill form being passed because of pressure from their paret companies which has a huge head count in developing countries. But these companies are not violating any pledge since the pledge does not mention anything about out sourcing work or creating any jobs. This might have been deliberately forgotten to favour the companies which have many businesses abroad. The ATR pledge just forces the companies to pay their takes to the government. This issue has not been taken well by the public and the media as well. But looking at the current job scenario with more than 12% of Americans still jobless, it is time that the democrats did something to patch this loophole up, its either this or keep loosing million or probably billions as taxes that could go in creating new jobs to American citizens. And with the mid term elections coming near, it is high time this is done.

This would make sense to you only if you wore fancy designer clothes or are a designer your self. The recent spates of copy cat clothes on fashion ramps have been a problem for designers. Until now there was no way to protect their designs of clothes and jewelry, but now there is. A bill is under processing which will increase the length of patent protection to fashion. This can be called as another accomplishment of the democrats after the health insurance bill. The same what that music, media and literature is protected under copyright laws, similarly fashion designs will be protected under this laws and can also be licensed to other design houses to manufacture and sell for a little profit sharing. These patents are supposed to last for duration for three years, which is more time than most of the designs are considered in vogue. The design patents only cover designs which are original and are nothing like any other design. This will give designers another way to use their designs to earn money.

The fashion industry immediately needed something like this since cheap knock off Chinese copies are ruining the fashion industry. This will give a legal means of acting against these copies and make fashion industry more profitable. Thou some fashion experts disagree with this bill and say that knock off dresses make their designs popular and make people find the original. But none the less this will increase the fashion designers scope and make the industry more competitive. Fashion houses will be know not just by celebrities wearing their clothes but also by the number of patents they hold. A new kid of patent wars can bring in more innovation. But what about old designs, people are going to rush in to patent them, it is going to be extremely hard to distinguish between original work and old work.

They were most probably not planning to return alive from war, but unfortunately or fortunately they have. Most of the dependents of military income are having a hard time paying bills and keeping up with monthly expenses. Also known as the silicone capital of America, this is the place where one out of 5 start ups in America is begun. It has the largest number of venture capitalists and the companies in California attract the highest investment when compared to the other companies in other states. Also the largest number of high tax paying individuals reside in this state along with some multi billionaires. But now the state is seeing its worse economical situation since industrialization in California began. The government of California has gone completely bankrupt. With the recent recession and the numerous companies filing for chapter 11, the complete stated in bankrupt. The government politicians and the aides of Arnold Schwarzenegger are looking at creative ways of attracting investments. The huge debt of $125 billion per year is getting too much to even be pending for the state. The budget deficit of the state is %15 billion and is growing rapidly. Credit rating for California has dropped to the lowest ever since ratings began. A recent meeting by the California government with the prime minister of China was to attract Chinese investments in California. Already most of the Californian companies get their American designed products build in Chinese companies. The governor of California is probably looking at doing the same with Chinese companies. He even invited CEO’s of Chinese companies to California and have a good idea about the investment opportunities here. He is hoping that the Chinese companies come and set up companies in California or just start out sourcing work to California. What ever the case, jut hope that the economic situation in California improves, because a bad economy is not good for innovative products to be launched.

Just a few years ago, the Federal bankruptcy laws were reformed. Many people consider this a result of the lobbying power of the credit industry. With the recent revelations of abusive practices on the part of credit companies, from credit cards providers to mortgage companies, it’s hard to deny this claim. To add credibility to this claim, who else but the credit industry would stand to gain from changing these laws. Lucky for today’s debtor, total bankruptcy is there to help.

The intent was sold as a way to prevent consumers from abusing the laws. The credit industry claimed that consumers simply ran up their credit bills knowing that bankruptcy was an easy way out. They backed this up by reporting that many people filed bankruptcy again and again. Of course, they took no responsibility for handing out new credit cards to people who were barely out of bankruptcy time and time again. The Obama administration is roping in churches around America to support legislations. This will make the church as supporters of the billions o dollars that are charged on cap and trade. In short they are working towards bribing the churches with the citizen’s tax money to help in support of capital and trade.

It is the same money that Al Gore was vying for when he was pushing the plight of the earth, which is exactly what the Obama government is roping in the churches for. It wasn’t the concern for the environment that made them work so hard to get people involved to save the environment, it was the greed of the cabon cap and the trade that made them do it. They were quite successful in getting governments to get involved and also to get a nobel prize. The democrats have made millions because of paying failing financial institutions tax payers money. What Obama government is offering is open bribes to get people involved to support his agenda. The need for Chuches to preach cap and trade is being seen as a boost in the arm for the Cap and trade bill and earn lots of money in favor in return. Churches are the next big move in the failing Obama government to help the already declining popularity of the government to increase. The proof is out in the public that churches were offered money and are still being offered money to support the cap and trade agenda. I there any way that environmental change is going to impact the churches, all it can do is instill more fear of the day of death and bring people to churches.

The non willingness of American politician to work as a single unit is causing more problems than the problems already at hand. All opposition parties do is keep looking for chances to throw dirt at the opposition and wait till the next election to make their “strategies” and plans. This is not just the case with American politicians but also with any other government that is not dictator ship based. But it can be seen in at its worse in the current United States politics.

It is predicted that the republicans will take charge from the congress after the mid tern elections this November. The current approval rate of the hope infusing Obama is not at a low of 44% from a high of 80% during the elections. Further alarming is the drop in approval of ratings for democrats and republicans. They are at 32% and 33% respectively, which is the lowest ever. The rest of the statistics also point to the same case of bad reputation of politicians. The inability of the politicians to work together for the good of the country instead looking for their parties is the reason for the people to stop trusting in the political system. They just refuse to stop being selfish for once and work to get the country out of the economic ditch it currently is in. All the opposition parties like to do is to blame the governing party for the mess the country really is in, hell it most probably prays for the mess to get worse so that it is easier for them to blame the governing party much more. The only noteworthy achievement of the democrats seems to be the health care bill which is not approved my more Americans than the ones who are willing to go for it looking at the inefficient means that with which the American insurance companies works.

The year 2011 is yet to come, and the blunders of 2010 will be analyzed later and criticized. For now let us look at some blunders made in the year 2009. 2009 was not an election year, but still there were many things that kept the politicians busy.

The first biggest blunder was made by Sarah Palin whose blunder was coined a specific term known as Death panels. This pulling the plug on grandma also found support from the governor of New York and also the from the opposition party Betsy McCaughey the heath care specialist. This provision was for medicare companies to pay for the counseling and psychiatric session of senior citizens to make them ready for end of life decisions concerned with writing a will, designate a health care proxy and other life ending decisions. This was misunderstood by many people who thought that this was a way of telling old people to just die. Palin was afterwards against this and expressed her discontent on her facebook page telling that she wouldn’t want the government to tell her parent that they are old and are not good enough to receive health care. Another blunder of 2009 was the issue of socialized medicine which was claimed by politicians that made many of the big health related bills called by congress. This was similar to the one in Canada and almost all of the citizens are provided health care under the government’s expense. This is also similar to what is followed in Britain where the hospitals and doctors are consider to be government employees. This was going to bring a drastic change in the American health care system, the estimates were way out of length. Cold War politics are a fascinating thing. They are a tale of schoolyard interactions in a macrocosm; a grudge that is almost laughable in its application and yet deadly serious in the same instant. Societies were created, destroyed and drastically changed because of these politics.
With the Allied victory in World War II, alliances devolved into a feudal-like territory grab. While the Western Powers, led by the United States occupied nations with the dogma of rebuilding them, the U.S.S.R. did the same a la Soviet, installing regimes tied to Moscow. The history of Eastern Europe is not pretty. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th Century, a dozen or so states sprung into being; states lined up geographically in epicenter of different continents, societies, religions and political practices. While the countries under Western protection had mostly similar cultures with their liberators, the Russian-controlled states were diverse and unique. In the attempt to assimilate these nations, Soviet regimes cracked down on cultural beliefs, icons, and religions. Coming just after the war to end all wars, the West (synonymous with the United States of America) was done with fighting on the continent. The battlefields of Asia therefore saw the real struggle of West vs. East, of democracy and communism duking it out.
Henry Kissinger deserves mention in this story. One of the more brilliant statesmen of the 20th century, Kissinger, serving under U.S. President Nixon, facilitated a renewal of relations with China. Since the defeat of the Republican faction of Chiang Kia-shek and the Communist takeover of the country, America had rejected and opposed the People’s Republic of China. At a crucial point in the Cold War, Kissinger’s wisdom in showing friendship to China not only boosted economic opportunities for America, it also struck fear in the heart of Russia; here was their sworn enemy the pinnacle of the Democratic West becoming best friends with a Communist ally, albeit an iffy one. It was a blow that sent the U.S.S.R. off balance and altering their strategy. Twenty years later, Russia took a crack at democracy herself.

At the root of it all is money. Money can be exchanged for goods and services, and people like goods and services, so they want their city/state/federal government’s laws to give, or let them keep, money.

President George W. Bush’s tax cuts in 2001 were a welcome relief to most Americans, although the Democrats were a little miffed. Now, 10 years later, these tax cuts are about to expire. President Barack Obama and the Democrats, who hold the majority of seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives, plan to renew the Bush-era tax cuts, with one stipulation: households or businesses whose income exceeds $250,000 will not qualify for the cut. Their taxes will revert to pre-Bush amounts, which was just shy of 40%.

The Republican Senators are furious. Every single one has promised to vote against the tax cuts unless they are presented for ratification in their pure, upper-income-included form. The Republicans, while a minority in the Senate, still have enough presence to filibuster and halt the passage of the tax cut bill. John Boehner, the Republican leader in the House, stated that he would vote for the renewal of the bill, leaving out the upper-income households, if that was the only choice possible. In short, he wants taxes cut for as many people as possible.

President Obama’s strategy is to give up $4 trillion in theoretical government income over the next ten years in tax cuts. By leaving out the $250,000+ bracket it would reduce that loss by $700 billion. Not all of the Democrats are supportive of President Obama’s renewing the cut. A few Senators have pointed out that another year or two of tax cuts across the board, for the rich too, would help hoist the economy out of the toilet by creating jobs. The well-known Joe Lieberman (CT) spoke out in favor of letting people keep more of their money, which they will then turn around and spend on those goods and services that make the world go ’round and help get things going again.

The issue will be decided by the end of 2010.

Politics are necessary in democratic government. It is through politics that laws are written, voted on, enacted, enforced, and tweaked. They can have great influence on societies and cultures. The relationship between politics and society works both ways, however. In 2008,there was a prime example of society affecting politics. Over a million California residents petitioned the government to amend the state constitution to recognize only man-woman marriages. California, home to a strong liberal political base, became the scene to a hot debate and campaigns from both sides became vehement. Riots and crime increased across the state, instigated by both sides, although the anti-legislation side was more widespread in its violence. The amendment was eventually passed, and illustrates how laws often arise from the bottom up.

Laws can start at the top too, like the Tea Act of 1773 shows. High costs of fighting in the French and Indian War moved the English throne to create and enforce a monopoly of several markets by the British East India Company. This decree allowed the BEIC to charge higher rates than the previously open market had dictated. As indicated by the riot in the harbor known as the Boston Tea Party, the law was not well received, and after a legal compromise, the law was repealed in 1778. The repeal brings up an important tenet of the politics/society relationship: unpopular laws will always be brought down. Whether the originate at the top of government of the bottom of society, if a law is deemed intolerable by the people, it will die. The right to govern comes from the people, and they are, if not swift, then certainly sure to revoke that right or strike down the choices made by the governing if those decisions are contrary to their will. This balance of powers ensures good government: the people give the right to govern and the government takes care of the people, through both request of the governed and the initiative of the governing. If they fail to care for those who placed them in power they are stripped of their right to govern.

Has it come to the point where all that you are only a source of money in the form of numerous takes that shave off your monthly income considerably? It might not be far from the truth. The corporate and the political class of America has been treating the American citizens as scrape goats. It is with the taxes of the people that big banks are helped when they dig a ditch for themselves.

A recent incident in Tennessee has brought this startling fact to the forefront. A house in rural Tennessee was let to burn by the out of town fire fighters because the residents of the failed to pay the annual tax that people located outside the city limits are supposed to pay. What’s even startling is that when the house was burning, the firefighters came near his property to save a neighbors house from engulfing into the flames. The firefighters just came and let the house burn down with four puppies inside the house. The family in question had been paying the tax for all the previous years regularly, but forgot to pay this year. This is the whole truth about the government of America who milks the cow dry and when the cow stops giving milk, it just lets it to die of starvation. The fact that a citizen of United States was deprived of a fundamental fact shows the issues surrounding the citizens of America. It has showed that basic rights like fire fighting service is not a basic right but a privilege which is received upon paying. It is the same case every where that tends to kick in the guts when you are down and out. Forcing people to pay for basic rights is a insult to the country, the next thing you will have to pay for is the air you breath and the sunlight you enjoy.

The recent oil spill in the gulf of Mexico has brought to front the role of politics and politicians in large global corporation. The recent British Petroleum oil spill is the larges oil spill in the history of the United States and the world. Its effects will be seen for the centuries to come in the form of discolored shorelines. But what’s more intriguing is the fact that Obama taking the blame for something which he was not seemed to be even remotely responsible. Obama has declared openly that what ever happened was his and only his own responsibility. He has been openly taking hits from every where. From television personalities and comedians to opposition parties are openly taking hits at Obama. Even his own party senator Bobby Jindal has not stopped from criticizing his government to their excuses for British Petroleum.

This is a sad scenario where the government knows it is responsible and they accept to be blamed for the mess they have caused. What the congress fears is that if they heavily criticize a multinational conglomerate such as British petroleum will have implications in the form of the backing of other such foreign companies who are willing to invest in America. Thou Obama has also lashed out at British Petroleum for spending millions on television advertisements and more money on their share holders, the company responded with willingness to pay all claims and claimants of the oil disaster. But what ever the end result, the chances of Obama serving a second term are very slim and even if the congress chooses Obama to lead this time, it is not certain his dwindling popularity can help. There has a lot to be done for the disaster currently at hands at the gulf of Mexico and just visiting will not help in dealing with this problem.

When the word “politics” is used, thoughts of orators, the Capitol building, campaigning nominees, and debates are summoned. All politics really are the science of how societies are governed. This takes on an exciting turn when taken to an international level. For example, British-American relationships during early years of World War II were very important; even though America wasn’t in the war, Britain needed a steady friendship with the nation that could keep her supplied with weapons and equipment, and America in turn, didn’t want to see their closest European ally overrun. The relationship was mutually beneficial and both societies were improved for it; England fought off invasion and America pulled itself out of the Great Depression by creating jobs to meet the quotas of war material Britain needed. Another example is that of the United States extending the hand of friendship to Communist China at the height of the the Cold War. Russia and America have been at each other’s throats for thirty years, and all of the sudden America is buddy-buddy with the shaky ally to the south of the U.S.S.R. This knocked the Russians off balance, which was good for America, while also benefiting both the U.S. and China with new trade possibilities and economic markets to buy and sell their goods. Russia gave up on Communism and became friends with the U.S. a couple decades later.

This is a broad view of politics between two parties. To look at it in microcosm, or zoomed in, is humorous but also insightful. Take for example, the schoolyard. Ivan and Sam have disliked each other since 1st grade. They each have their friends that they hang out with on the playground, aware of each other, occasionally casting scowls back and forth. All of the sudden, Zhou, one of Ivan’s lesser gang members, starts hanging out with Sam. In fact, they’re getting together at each other’s houses. Ivan’s worried about having a friend of Sam’s so close, and so he soon becomes friends with Sam too.

It’s all the same principles and actions, whether’s it is between nations or twelve year-olds.

Well its happened now if you have enough money in your Swiss bank accounts, lets say a half a billion, then you can easily buy the next president of the United States. Why bother going through the ugly political game when you can still have all the power that the president of United States has without even stepping inside the White House. This happened earlier this year when the Supreme Court gave the right to foreign corporations to buy the entire party with its next potential president included. This right is now constitutionally granted and there is nothing illegal to accept billions from random corporations and even rich billionaires around the world with money to spend. It is now as simple as taking over companies for large multinational corporations. They can just as easily buy publicity in elections by paying for the money spend during election campaign. They also now have the constitutional right to create United States subsidiaries easily in United States. Before they used to buy presidents secretly by laundering billions through the United States Chamber of Commerce. The main task of the United States Chamber of commerce is to raise money from foreign sources. Millions can be laundered just as easily through the American Crossroad GPS owned by Karl Rove or other such sources who spend millions on every election campaign.

This has brought in front of the public the alarming fact that anyone with large enough pockets can control America without requiring to be an American citizen. People like Chinese president Hu Jitao, Saudi Arabian King Abdullah Aziz, non American billionaire corporations such as British Petroleum to control the country of United States. This move by the supreme court has made United States more vulnerable than it already was and is causing American politics to get more dirty that it already is by letting open money transactions to take place.

The increasing popularity of celebrities and the huge fan following they have, has given politicians a new way of getting people interested in them. The biggest advantage of radio, newspaper, internet and televisions is the people are well connected and thoroughly informed about the happenings in the world. They also are in constant touch with their favorite celebrities, whose lives they constantly follow by using there modern telecommunication mediums. Sites like twitter and facebook have brought million of fans of a celebrity in direct touch with them without any medium in between.

It is the wealthy corporations and the companies that decide what is going to come to the people as news. Many articles in daily news papers and the internet are paid advertisements that are mixed with real news. This co-operation helps wealthy corporations and politicians to control what the public and divert their interests. These organizations have begun to use famous celebrities with huge fan following to their advantage. One such example is Tom Cruise’s propagation of the religion scientology. It is not known what caused the media executives to cause tom cruise to take the center stage, but there was some kind of bigger news that the media wanted to focus the attention of the public to. One of the incidents that is known to have happened earlier that day was the death of 4 commandos in Afghanistan in a covert mission along with 7 more army men the same day. But there was hardly any mention of this news in the media instead the news of tom cruise making a fool of him self in front of billions of people. What ever the news, this tactic of using celebrities to cover up alarming news is being used more often than we realize and it is quite effective in molding the minds of the people.

The United Kingdom’s transformation from a monarchy to a parliamentary system has been a long, convoluted one, and the story of the office of Prime Minister is as good a vehicle to tell it with as any. The Prime Minister is not an office that was called into being; more correctly, necessity again gave birth to invention, this time of a political office. In the late part of the 17th century, the Parliament of England gave the title of “joint constitutional monarchs” to King William and Queen Mary, and enacted a series of bills that took power from the monarch and entrusted it to the Parliament. These bills are known as the Revolutionary Settlement, and it is because of this shift of ruling power that the Premiership came into being.

Sir Robert Walpole, who was First Lord of the Treasury, is generally considered to be the first Prime Minister, although since the office was not created, there is no official “first” Prime Minister. After 200 years of uncertainty about the office, The Ministers of the Crown Act finally, officially recognized the Premiership in 1937, designating a salary for the person in office.

While the United Kingdom still has a monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II, it is almost solely a cultural iconic role, with next to no political power. However, the Queen, or whichever ruling sovereign there is, is briefed weekly by the Prime Minister on the goings-on of their society and the country’s politics. The monarch’s role, however, is to merely “…advice, to be consulted, and to warn.” When first called into office, the Prime Minister’s first task is to “form a government”, by issue of the Queen, consisting of ministers that will have the loyalty and support of the House of Commons.

The current Prime Minister is David Cameron, invited to become so by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010.

Everyone who has graduated from high school is familiar with phrases from Government or American Heritage classes, phrases like “consent of the governed” and “rule of law” and know the stories of enfranchisement throughout U.S. history. The United States of America is based on the idea that every single citizen can have a say in their government, at all levels. The belief that they have a right to cast their vote however they choose.

And yet, so few are casting their votes. Out of the 225,746,457 people eligible to vote in this country as of 2008, 122,394,724 of them voted in the presidential election of that year. The high turn out is partially due to the sensations attached to this election. In 2004, 197,005,000 citizens were eligible to vote, but only 125,736,000 people actually cast a ballot. These two elections show a distressing trend; more people eligible to vote are choosing not to. When only slightly more than 50% of the population is voting, it means that those being elected to public office, those who will be speaking on citizens’ behalf and making decision that will affect those citizens, are being chosen by one neighbor for the other. In a country that is blessed to provide the opportunity to so many to vote in such a powerful way, so many are refusing to partake in the political process that is offered to them, and yet still take occasion with election outcomes. There is a saying that is being proven sadly true: of three people, one votes and two complain about politicians. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all three voted?

It is very important that more and more people put their vote to use and put in their two cents about the people who are elected, the choice-makers who will be doing their best for a few years to help the country progress. Voters have their own beliefs and tenets, and should contribute those to the unified voice that declares election results. The ability to influence government through the political process commands the bearer to take the responsibility of using that ability.

Late August of 2010 saw a massive rally in the nation’s capital. People from across the nation, numbering somewhere between 80,000 and 90,000 (officials estimate 87,000) came together at the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument to hear talk-show host Glenn Beck speak, with a guest appearance of former vice presidential candidate and former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin. The Tea Party movement brought record number of people to the rally, titled by Beck “Restoring Honor.” The rally took place on the 47th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech given by Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. The rally was attended by Dr. Alveda King, MLK’s neice.

Despite intense criticism that he was dishonoring the renown reverend, Glenn Beck spent much of his speaking time focusing on a religious aspect of improvement for the country. He encouraged attendees to kneel down and pray, specifically where their children could see them do so. Beck made it clear on the event’s website that it was not a political rally, and repeatedly asked those attending not to bring signs with political slogans or messages on them, stating that they could detract from the peaceful message the rally was intended to send. Sarah Palin strayed towards politics during her remarks, but the normally vocal Tea Party members in attendance showed restraint.

The left side of the American political spectrum were unrelenting in their comments and jabs at Beck and his rally, especially Reverend Al Sharpton. With persecution from all sides, Mr. Beck continued with plans for the rally.

So what is the center of this issue? Should a public figure be allowed to hold a rally with a spiritual message in the nation’s capital? Is that an okay thing to do? Of course it is. Many comparisons and contrasts have been drawn between Dr. King and Glenn Beck during the rally, but in essence they were both men speaking to their people about what they believe would alleviate problems in the United States. They can’t be faulted for that. The right to speak, to encourage; that’s what’s great about America.

September hosts the mid-term primaries, when voters select nominees for governor and senators in several states. In 2010, a new breed of voter is making waves at the primaries: the Tea Partyist.

Begun in 2009, the Tea Party movement has quickly become a bear in the big city: the Democrats are sure it’s a wild animal and should be caged, the Republicans are glad to have a pet but are still wary of it. The Tea Party has ousted three Democratic members of Congress, along with four Republicans backed by the Grand Old Party but not the Tea Party. The Tea Party has also announced it will back the Delaware Senate contender Christine O’Donnell against another Republican, Mark Castle, who has served as both Governor and a Congressman. The Tea Party is doing much the same thing in New Hampshire as well.

This new demographic puts the Republican Party in an interesting position. Will it stick by its incumbents and those close to it, or will it cater to the Tea Party and throw the GOP clout behind Tea favorites?

The Democrats on the other hand, have an interesting conundrum as well. Will the Tea Party split the Republican Party and allow the Democrats to maintain control of the House and Senate? Or will the growing Tea Party overwhelm the Democratic voters and send Democratic congressmen out the door?

The Tea Party formed to protest President Barack Obama’s health care reform, economic policies, and other changes to the government. It quickly spread across the country as local grassroots movements brought themselves under the Tea Party umbrella. As poll ratings of President Obama continue to slide lower and lower, even in states that voted heavily for him in 2008, the Tea Party has gained more and more clout. The primary elections that they are now having a very real affect on, are a sign of what the Tea Party may achieve in the real elections on November 2, 2010. Democrats say that Tea Party influence will hurt the Republicans, while Republicans say that the Tea Party enthusiasm is a good sign of victory.

So how is it that America pulls this off? How is it that the political process works so well here? Now there are plenty of cynics and pundits to point out flaws, shortcomings, and criticisms, but the 2008 U.S. election saw zero casualties, unlike the 2008 election in Zimbabwe, where 85 people were killed, thousands injured, and a hundred election officials disappeared.

America continues to run smoothly because of the rules we set up. The Founding Fathers created one of the most flawless, if complex, systems of government ever to be formed. The separation of powers, and specifically the interlocking authorities of the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of the government are pure inspired genius.

While the Founding Fathers cautioned against stone-set political affiliations, over the years two political parties have sprung up and continue to dominate American politics, the Democratic and Republican parties. The names have changed over the years, but the core issue has remained: money in the hands of the people, or money in the hands of the government. In recent years, third party politics; that is, a party, or parties, other than these two, have seen a large influx of interest.

Politics are a tricky business, because they are how governments, and societies, and be improved. However, in an American-type democracy, one must be elected, a party must come to power, to make those improvements. To be elected, one must offer society what they want.

The American scene of politics can be a convoluted one at times, but the system works. It has withstood trial and trouble before, and will continue to do so, thanks to the brilliant writers of the Constitution of the United States.

The Republican party name was chosen as a reference to Thomas Jefferson’s party, the Democratic-Republicans. In the 1800s, it was in favor of high tariffs and high profits, and favored business interests and the gold standard for currency. This both drew support and criticism from the country. The McKinley Tariff, which acheived the Republican goal of higher tariffs, did considerable damage, especially to the agrarian population. In return for the McKinley Tariff, the Republicans conceded on the gold standard and silver as a money-backer gained prominence.

Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican to be elected President, and the last half of the 19th Century was hosted by a Republican in the White House. With the onslaught of the Great Depression and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the country switched religiously to Democratic Presidents for the next 30 years, with the exception of Dwight D. Eisenhower. After World War II the country again began to vote for Republicans, and the President was from that party for the majority of the second half of the 20th Century.

After the George W. Bush presidency for the first 8 years of the 21st Century, the Democrats were elected into not only the Presidential office, but the majority of Senate seats and seats in the House of Representatives. The future of the Democratic/Republican swing of things rests on how the Democrats do in managing the United States.

Democratic politics in the past have traditionally catered to an agrarian demographic, but also including minorities,labor unions, and other groups benefited by social liberalism. The African American population has long been a strong supportive section of the Democratic Party. Democrats have taken steps, such as “free silver”, the push for silver coinage in the 1800s, to benefit these groups. This move would damage Northeastern businesses, but the inflation caused by a break from the gold standard would profit agrarians and others. In recent times, the Democratic Party has built a platform of environmental concern, increased rights for laborers, and heavy emphasis on health care. Democratic politics tend to be focused towards an economy based on free enterprise, supplemented with government intervention as needed. It states that injustices in society should be rectified by the government, and favors income taxes that mirror the growth or shrinkage of taxable amounts.

The Golden Age of the Democrats was the during the first decades of the 20th Century, especially during the Great Depression. Due to Herbert Hoover’s well-meaning but bumbling attempts to solve the economic crisis, the Democrat’s presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt was like a savior, rally the country not only through the Great Depression but also to victory in the most severe war the country, and the world, has ever seen. Popular support for the Democrats soared with Roosevelt’s New Deal economics,and Democrats were elected to governmental positions with new fervor; The House of Representatives was under Democratic control for more than 70 years, with a few short exceptions.

As of 2004, The Democratic Party is the largest political party in the United States, followed by the Republican Party and then registered independents. In 2008, the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, was elected President of the United States, and became the first African American to be called to that office.

Some governments are good, some governments are bad. Governments exist to serve, care for, protect, and in general serve in a parental capacity to its citizens. John Locke, one of the most famous, intelligent, and oft-quoted philosophers of human history states that the disastrous end of governments would be brought around because of the idea of “divine right of kings.” He proved to be pretty correct, as Louis XVI of France discovered. All throughout history, individuals who have held power because…well, because they say so, tend to end up in a bad way. Louis XVI, beheaded. Mussolini, bullet-riddled and hung. Hitler, dead by his own hand and burned in the midst of his shattered country. Point being, in the end society will always root out oppressive governments. They will install and support governments that advocate personal determination concerning one’s “Life, Health, Liberty, or Possessions” as John Locke put it.

Due to a variety of reasons, citizens and the societies they live in will often tolerate bad, or at least less-than-stellar governments. Why is this so? Why are people willing to put up with bad decision-makers? All of the heads of state previously mentioned were removed, but not until after a long reign that injured those they were meant to protect and care for. It is because of fear. Often it is because of apathy. The convoluted wheels of bureaucracy sometimes get in the way. For these reasons, and others, governments that perform their duties badly are allowed to retain power.

For these very reasons, societies should shake off their fears, apathies, and red tape to make changes in their governments. They give consent to be governed, but on their terms. A nation’s people run the government, not kings, presidents or prime ministers or secretaries. When governmental institutions make poor decisions or outright bad ones, society owes it to itself to make changes that will improve its government.

Lyndon B. Johnson was President from 1963 until 1969. Serving as Vice President at the time when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was elevated to the Presidency and was again reelected by the nation in 1964. The hallmark of his time in the Oval Office was his “Great Society”, which focused on improving health care, education, and living conditions, while decreasing poverty and crime. President Johnson became one of the few presidents who made good on so many of the promises he made. During his presidency, health care was addressed with Medicaid, a program which offers medical treatment to those who cannot afford it, and Medicare, which supplies medical treatment to the elderly. Education was given a bright future by massive government spending in that sector, and extensive programs that offered grants to low-income students and the arts. Johnson also cracked down on gun control, and put in place laws that would aid the poor, like Work Study programs and food stamps.

Barack Obama was sworn in as President in 2008, and has focused on many of the same areas as Johnson did. Dealing with an immediate economic downturn, Obama put the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 in place, aimed at curtailing the downturn and reviving the American economy. He also had an extensive bill passed which addressed healthcare needs in the U.S. Obama withdrew U.S. forces from the warzone in Iraq, which is one thing that Johnson did not achieve in Vietnam.

Both of these men shouldered a huge load with the title “President of the United States.” While not perfect, they have both done what they believe will best benefit the nation, and striven to do their best.

A century and several small wars later, the major Western powers were designating their own “spheres of influence” in China. The United States proposed the Open Door Policy, where all nations could conduct business in China which, despite several setbacks worked just fine until 1937, when Japan seized part of the country. After World War II and the Communist victory over Chiang Kai-shek, the United States refused to recognize the People’s Republic of China, continuing its relationship with the Republic of China government-in-exile on Taiwan. Diplomacy with mainland China remained frosty for the following three decades during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Finally, in the early 1970s, Sino-American relations improved in an odd way: two ping-pong players from the two countries became friends at a tournament. The nations elevated this contact to an endorsed national movement, and in layman’s terms, decided to be friends again. With this announcement, world politics changed. The West opened trade again with the PRC, and the Communist godfather, Russia, began worrying that a Communist neighbor was suddenly buddy-buddy with the United States.

Good feelings and cultural exchange continued until the Chinese government’s bloody repression of democratic elements in 1989. Following this, the West again condemned the People’s Republic and while not completely severing ties, the U.S. and other nations imposed multiple sanctions.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 aided in closing the gap between China and America. The PRC offered extensive support in the War on Terrorism. In more recent years, Sino-American politics have improved, especially with visits between the Obama administration and Hu Jintao, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. The two governments, while not seeing eye-to-eye on all counts, are nonetheless working together to improve relationships between their societies, especially in the economic sector.

Going back to politics turning on health care, each country develops health care systems that fits the needs of their people. France and Germany, to take an example, are working to lower the spending needed to secure medicines. South African politics are based heavily on the disease AIDS and how to treat it (there are more HIV infections in South Africa than anywhere else in the world). Iceland offers tax-subsidized health care to all of its citizens for free. Australia does something similar. In the United States, concern has grown over the percentage of the population that doesn’t not have any means of paying for medical coverage. President Barack Obama has made this problem a focal point of his administration. China has been revamping its public health system in tandem with the World Health Organization (WHO), improving water cleanliness and other steps to bettering the health of its citizens. WHO assists countries all over the world, helping millions of people to live informed, healthier lives.

The cycle never ends, and that’s what makes government good. People want to be healthy; when they’re healthy, they are happy. And happy people vote for the people who will keep them healthy and subsequently healthy, so it’s very important for politicians that they ensure good health care for their constituents. It’s a cycle that perpetuates itself, and ensures that those elected to public office are unable to abuse the power entrusted to them, because, on the flip side, people without a way to keep healthy are unhappy, and won’t vote for someone who isn’t offering medical aid for them.

Of course, society has a responsibility too. It has to do its part in raising up doctors, physicians, pharmacists, and allow for research funding to improve procedures and medical treatment. Power comes from the people, and government and people working together make for a good society.

The film V for Vendetta takes place in an alternate present, where the United Kingdom is under a tyrannical government that regulates everything 100%: media, medicine, etc. Citizens live in fear of “Fingermen” who have authority to snatch people at will on suspicion of being subversives. The movie is based on a comic of the same name, written during the Thatcher era where a strongly conservative government was worrying liberals. The comic, and subsequently the film, expresses the concern over government who gradually exert more power over their people.

The made-for-television series John Adams is a work of historical fiction, but is based more on history than fiction, almost completely so. It was produced at a time when American politics were beginning to look back to the birth of the nation and to revive the original, primary tenets laid down by the founding fathers. John Adams came at a time that capitalized on the desire of people to see a return to primitive American government, one not convoluted by political parties, campaigning and maneuvering.

The satirically humorous Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb plays on American fears concerning nuclear war between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Made during the darkest days of the Cold War, the comedic movie dealt with very real concerns over government and military management of international relations and the way in which post-World War II politics had played out. It illustrates the fears of real-life people during the nuclear scare while also gawking at the sad absurdity of it all. Director Stanley Kubrick makes the point that governments should be cool-headed, intelligent, and diplomatic in their relations with each other.

A society’s films can say a lot about their political beliefs.

Back to the Tea Party itself though. The movement has come under repeated fire from many different groups on both sides of the political spectrum, mostly for out-of-order statements by members of Tea Parties. Since the Tea Party is localized, there is very little central leadership, and so there are many instances, many regrettable, that have occurred around the country and damaged the movement. Recently, the National Tea Party Federation was formed to bring unification to the movement.

The Obama administration has made a point of touting the tax cuts that have been made, which nominally reduce taxes for all but five percent of the population. President Obama pointed out that while the Tea Party movement is railing against his lawmaking, he is trying hard to drive down health care costs and reminded them that taxes required of 95% of working Americans have been cut down.

The Tea Party movement may just be national steam being let off in the face of economic crisis. However, it has pointed out some important points: If the people are unhappy, things have to change somewhat, since the right to govern is from them.

I like to consider myself a somewhat financially responsible human being, but we all encounter situations that test our financial strength. For various reasons, everyone has unexpected costs. Whether textbooks for school or gasoline in your car, some costs can catch us off guard. While managing finances is not that hard with online banking, I often find myself checking it every week or so rather than daily like my OCD parents. I for one, always think I have more than I actually do, which is perhaps due to my constant coffee runs or late night fast food runs.

Either way, I was in a pickle, because I had several bills looming over my head and not enough money to pay for them all. Paychecks never seam to come fast enough, and I was going to run out of money well before my next check. Unfortunately, this happens to me more than a few times each year, so I developed a backup emergency plan to bail my unorganized butt out of financial torture. After the first incident a few years ago, I got a prepaid card and kept adding $50 to it each month, which acts as my personal credit card I use for times like these, except it does not impact my credit score.

One of the reasons I like the prepaid card is because I can pay my bills with them and use it at an ATM is necessary to withdraw cash to my bank account, which covers any incidentals and protects me from those nasty overdraft charges. I know there are better options out there, but the prepaid card has saved my account from over-drafting on more than one occasion. Put a little money in the prepaid card each month, and you have yourself a zero interest credit card.

It’s an interesting field of study, but school schedules or majors got in the way, and the time to take a political science class just never appeared. It’s important, however, that everybody learn a little bit about how the political world turns, so here’s the Poli Sci rundown: Political science is the study of, you guessed it, politics. More specifically, it’s the study of political ideas; policies, behaviors, governments and their judicial, legislative, economic, civil, and cultural practices. It is an attempt to make sense of how people interact with each other, albeit on a national scale. Political science’s home is a little tricky, because, as Professor J.R. Stoner Ph.D, of Louisiana State University puts it, political science “lives on the fault line between the ‘two cultures’[...]“. It deals with scientific study, but it also deals with people and how they think and feel. Those who study political science take an interest in, and play a part in, international politics. This is how nations interact with each other, the relationships that they engage in, just as if they were individual people. Political scientists have been influencing political doctrine and governments since the Roman times. Niccolò Machiavelli is the best-known, and is generally hailed as the pinnacle of political theory. He took a rather frank, harsh stance on politics, as did Thomas Hobbes after him. John Locke, another famous political scientist and one who greatly influenced the American Founding Fathers, was much more optimistic in his view on politics. He believed that societies could learn to work with each other without the use of a central, powerful government, while Hobbes argued that a monarchy-like regime was necessary. These men are examples of what political scientists do. Political scientists often advise politicians and policymakers, or go into public office themselves. They look for patterns and “rules” to politics that they can they shape into laws, in much the same way that scientists deal with the natural world. International politics becomes the great laboratory and the experiments undertaken, the conclusions drawn and redrawn, and the knowledge gained therein are all bottled up in human diplomacy.

In the United States, a person is allowed up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for family medical reasons. These reasons can include the birth and care of the employee’s child, or adoption of a child, taking care of a family memeber’s health, or taking care of an employee’s own health. The 12 weeks that are allotted are within a 12 month period, and your job is protected during this time. Unfortunately, this act does not apply to those who have been at their job for less than a year before taking their leave, and you have to work for a company that is considered “big enough”; at least 50 employees.

In many other countries, similar policies are considered Parental Leave. Most other industrialized countries have a significantly different view of Parental Leave than the United States.

In Canada, all employees are covered. If you are a full time worker, contract worker, or part time worker, you will be covered. In Canada, there are different types of leave, depending on the situation. If you have member of your family who is seriously ill, you are allowed up to eight weeks leave, unpaid, with job security. For maternity leave, a woman is allowed 15 weeks paid leave for the birth of a child, if she has worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks. There are also 35 weeks of parental benefits allowed to be shared between the mother and the father.

In England, most women are entitled to up to one year of maternity leave. If you are self employed, working in the armed forces, are a share fisherwoman, or normally employed abroad, you will not be entitled to this maternity leave. During the first half of this leave, your employment contract is still in effect. You are still entitled to acrue paid time off and any other benefits.

Student loans for college students has recently been changed. How you get a loan, where you get it, and what you end up paying have all gone through an overhaul. President Obama signed legislation in March, 2010 to mandate these new changes.

In the past, when getting a student loan, a student would have to go through a private financial institution. Many of these companies would charge fairly high interest, as well as other fees. The new law eliminates these fees, and with the savings that are estimated, the government hopes to expand Pell grants. This will also make it much easier for a student to repay their student loans after graduation.

Students will no longer be directed toward a college’s favored banks to get their student loans. These loans will now come directly from the college itself, and be disbursed to the college from the government.

The cap that students will be allowed to have for repayments of student loans will be 10%, rather than the current cap of 15%.

The new law also invests in the colleges themselves. There is about $2 billion dollars allotted to go to community colleges throughout the next four years. The government holding the loans is said to generate more than $60 billion in the next 10 years.

The new law is supposed to make it easier for students to get a loan that they are actually able to pay off. Starting as of 2014, students will be able to apply for an income based repayment, making it much easier to repay these loans.

There are many different opinions in the general public about this new law. Some people are vehemently against it, and claim that with this new law, the government is trying to take away our freedoms. Others agree with it wholely, claiming that it is a way to help people get an education without having to worry about staggering student loan payments.

What is currently being referred to as a financial crisis was originally triggered by a shortfall in the banks. By 2010, many of our large financial institutions have collapsed. The housing market has suffered badly. Many people have lost their homes, jobs, and more.

In early 2008, the unemployment rate was hovering hear 5 percent. The unemployment rate peaked in October of 2009, at 10.1 percent unemployment. As of June 2010, the United States unemployment rate was still at 9.5 percent. These are daunting figures for Americans looking for jobs.

Foreclosure rates are the highest they have ever been in the United States. Many Americans are losing not only their jobs, but their homes as well. In Nevada, nearly one in ever 95 homes has been, or is being, foreclosed on.

It is said by some economists that as many as 46 of the 50 states in the U.S. could face bankruptcy by the end of 2010. It is not only the individuals in America that are facing economic hardship. Many companies are failing, as well as the states themselves.

In these difficult times, it can be hard to keep positive. Looking toward the bright side, many aspects of the economic downturn are starting to get better. Though the unemployment rate is still staggering, it is slowly getting better. Many financial institutions are becoming more OK with lending to people. The housing market may still be down, but it is getting better.

Many economists today say that we are finally pulling slowly out of the recession. Things are starting to look better for the United States than they have in years. We may see an end to the economic crisis soon.

The same survey also found that independent voters believe that more republicans are needed in Congress to try and stop out of control government spending. A new political action committee has been established to help the GOP capture the independent vote this fall, it is known as the Resurgent Republic. Former Republican Party head Ed Gillespie formed the group along with political activist Whit Ayres last year with an eye on the 2010 Congressional races. The goal of the group is to try and shift the balance of power in both the House and the Senate. It was formed after the President pushed his health care reform plan through the Congress.

At its website the Resurgent Republic makes it clear that jobs will be the key issue that they focus on during the fall campaign. The group says while new government jobs have been created this year thanks to the census, there is no significant growth in employment in the private sector. They question the effectiveness of the government stimulus program backed by the democrats which was supposed to help create new jobs. The Resurgent Republic supports tax credits for small businesses instead which they say would provide real economic growth and put millions of out of work Americans back on the job. Polls show that creating new jobs remains the number one concern of people across the country.

Is freedom of speech in the United States a true freedom? Many people think that there is too much censorship in our current world to have freedom of speech considered still in effect.

One very good example of this is banned books. Many books have been added to the banned books list, including some literature that up until recently has been considered classic. Even Shakespeare has been banned in certain areas.

The question that arises, why are these books banned? Many times it is a parent or teacher that brings the faults of a book to the forefront. They feel that the particular book is unfit to be read by children. The book in question may be considered “sexually explicit” by the reviewer. Other times it may go against the religious views of the reader. Once a person decides that a book should be banned, whether it is from their local library, school, the state or even throughout the whole country, they would need to get other supporters.

Unfortunately, if enough people agree that a particular book is unfit to be read, it can, and has, been banned either locally, through the state, or all the way up to the national government.

Many people disagree with the banning of books in the United States. They say that it is freedom of speech, and therefore should not be censored. Unfortunately, book banning continues to happen on a frequent basis. Some are worried that if this practice continues and develops, other forms of free speech will be targeted as well.

Already in the United States there is censorship in books, television, and movies. Many people are worried that one day this will extend to the Internet as well. Many in the United States are concerned that their freedom of speech is at risk.

About 5 in every 1,000 women in America suffers from anorexia. Nearly one-third of women in America suffer from bulimia. It is estimated that nearly 15 percent of all people who suffer from eating disorders are male.

Anorexia is in the top three most common chronic illnesses in teenagers. Up to 10 percent of anorexics die within a short time of becoming anorexic, and that number increases with the amount of people that go without treatment.

As the number of obese Americans grows, so does the number of people with eating disorders. It has been shown that the two frequently go hand in hand. It has also been shown that many people who are described as “frequent dieters” tend to lean toward more serious eating disorders. A frequent dieter is defined as someone who describes themselfs as almost always or always being on a diet.

There are different types of treatments for eating disorders. Outpatient programs are the least restrictive programs. In an outpatient program, a person would see a nutritionis and therapist a few times a week. Inpatient programs are more intense programs. With an inpatient program, a person would be admitted to the facility 24/7 until the treatment is completed.

Treatment for eating disorders can be long term. Usually this is a 3-6 year process. For some people, multiple treatment programs are needed before full recovery.

Some signs of anorexia and bulimia include: preoccupation with the fat content and calories in food, hair loss, or a greying of skin. Fear of eating, and denying food on a frequent basis is a major indicator of an eating disorder. These are just a few of the many signs of eating disorders.

The hearings in the U.S. Senate have wrapped up and now we wait for the vote. President Obama is very optimistic that his nominee for the Supreme Court will win approval even though she has never served as a judge in any capacity in the past. Elena Kagan is currently the Solicitor General of the United States and is a former Dean at the Harvard Law School.

At her confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kagan promised to keep her politics separate from her judging. She says she will decide cases based on the law and not her personal feelings but some Republicans are not convinced. There are a number of conservative senators who are already on record saying they will vote against her. Senator John McCain did not like the way that she blocked military recruiting while she was Dean of the Harvard Law School and says he can’t support someone who discourages military service.

While there are a handful of senators who have said they will vote no, there are many more who say they will vote yes. They are not concerned over her lack of judicial experience and point to other great justices who did not have any experience at the time that they were named to the court like William Rehnquist. They are also quick to point out that she does have high court experience serving as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Democrats hold a 58 to 41 seat advantage in the Senate so it would appear to be a lock that she will be approved and the question becomes how many Republicans will vote in favor of the nomination. There were eight Republicans who crossed the aisle and joined Democrats in supporting President Obama’s last high court nominee, Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

As political bickering clogs the headlines of most news publications, it can be frustrating for even the most optimistic voter to imagine our politicians solving the country’s problems in an efficient manner. Much of the problem lies in the US’s political infrastructure – an unwieldy bureaucracy by anyone’s standards. If we take a close look at our democracy, it becomes increasingly clear that it is anything but; our voices are surely not being heard nor acted upon. In light of this, let’s look at libertarianism as an alternate mindset. Though it sometimes gets a bad rap, in fact, libertarianism can be a uniquely fulfilling state of mind.

National Change Vs. Personal Change

In his landmark book, <u>How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World</u>, Harry Browne outlines many libertarian principles. For instance, he argues that believing that we can make a difference with our votes is largely a fallacy. Even if people rally around a specific cause, it is often a waste of time, since it’s very difficult to organize enough people to produce a political result. The opportunity cost, Browne argues, for such a course of action is high: what are we missing out on during the time we spend trying to influence others? Is there, perhaps, something more fulfilling to our own happiness and the happiness of our friends and family that we could affect? Though protesting and political organizing can be satisfying and even fun activities for some, it is hard to imagine that these people would not be happier doing something that would have a higher likelihood of changing their lives on a smaller scale – something that they actually have the power to change. If more political activists considered this, perhaps more would choose to self-actualize rather than rail against something that is often as immutable as the weather.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has had it with McDonalds. They are trying to put pressure on the fast food giant to stop marketing its products to kids. The group has accused McDonalds of predatory marketing by using its Happy Meals to get generation after generation of children hooked on unhealthy junk food. While the Center calls the practice “creepy” the top executive at McDonalds is calling the claim absurd.

Jim Skinner is McDonalds CEO and has put an open letter on the company website defending the chain. He writes that the claims from the Center for Science in the Public Interest are an insult to all of their employees around the world. Skinner says that by selling Happy Meals with popular toys they are carrying on a thirty year tradition that customers love. In his letter to the executive director of the group he writes “that parents understand and appreciate that Happy Meals are a fun treat, with right-sized, quality food choices for their children.”

The Center though compares McDonalds to the stranger on the playground offering kids candy. They claim that the practice undermines parents attempts to raise healthy kids but it appears that public opinion is not on their side. Comments related to this story on the web show that most people are defending the sale of Happy Meals pointing out that kids are not the ones driving to McDonalds and buying the food, parents are. Most people agree it is the parents job to control what their children consume and if they are o.k with an occasional burger and fries then the Center for Science in the Public Interest should be o.k. with it. Others say it is ridiculous to accuse McDonalds of trying to harm children after all the work the company has done establishing Ronald McDonald houses near hospitals all over the world where critically ill children are treated. The houses give the parents a place to stay for free so they can be close to their children while they get treatment.

It is in tough economic times that we are more likely to ask what our political parties are doing for the benefit of society. Elected politicians can point to the enactment of the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act on March 18, 2010.

The HIRE Act exempts business from paying their share of the Social Security taxes on certain wages paid to new hires. The tax cut is an incentive for companies to hire new employees by effectively reducing the cost of each new hire.

To qualify for the tax credit, a company must hire an individual between February 3, 2010 and January 1, 2011 and the individual must be unemployed. The credit will also apply if the new hire has worked less than 40 hours in the past 60 days prior to his hiring. In addition, if the employee stays on for at least 52 weeks, businesses may claim additional tax benefits.

IF Everybody Wins, What’s Not to Like?
Is there a downside to the HIRE Act? The newly employed worker benefits because she has a job that may not have existed without the new tax credit. The company hiring is happy because the effective “cost” of the new hire is lower than it would have been otherwise. The economy gets a boost when unemployment numbers go down. So what’s the downside? The downside is the tax revenues that are not collected which would normally go towards the Social Security fund. If anyone needs reminding, the Social Security fund is not solvent to fully meet all its future obligations.

Our political parties tend to explain one side of the argument. Nobody likes to pay taxes and sometimes, there are real economic benefits to tax cuts. So the HIRE Act is good for the short term. Social Security is for the long run.

To try and get a better handle on what affect a change might have on soldiers, over 200,000 surveys are going out to both active members of the military as well as members of the reserves. Questions like, how would you feel if you had to share a bathroom with a homosexual are on the survey which commanders will use to help them implement a new policy. The President has given the military until December 1 to complete a study about how the change would affect troops and the survey is a key part of the study.

Congress will ultimately have to approve any change in the policy that was adopted when Bill Clinton was President. Most Republicans are already on record with their opposition to allowing gays to openly serve in the military and a majority of Democrats say they will only sign on if military commanders support the change. This issue is certainly going to be one of the big topics on the campaign trail this fall with every member of the House of Representatives up for relection along with 36 members of the U.S. Senate. Recent public opinion polls have shown a great deal of support for repealing the don’t ask don’t tell policy with three fourths of Americans believing gays should be able to openly serve in the military.

It is probably a truism that there have always been celebrities. Whether it was the nobility or the notorious, people have always been fascinated by the famous. Today, celebrity culture seems to be out of control. Dozens of cable channels are devoted to nothing but tracking every movement of the even slightly famous, and millions of people buy magazines filled with little else other than pictures of movie stars, models, and musicians. Why is our society so enraptured by celebrity? It’s not a passing fad, so there must be something more to the fascination that a cultural trend. Let’s think about some causes for our love of the famous.

Evolution And The Survival Of The Fittest

If we view human psychology from an evolutionary point of view, it can help us understand celebrity culture. The characteristics that we possess are the same characteristics that helped humans survive over the thousands of years that they lived in little hunter-gatherer tribes. In these bands, survival was paramount. The most powerful male or males decided who received the most resources, so it made sense for the average person to align himself with these males. Perhaps keeping tabs on these powerful males made it easier to remain in their good favors.

Wish Fulfillment

It is also a truism that, to the victor go the spoils. The average person in our society, however, is not much of a victor. As Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation”. Just getting by does not win many spoils, so people often aspire for something better. Unfortunately, again, the average person does not succeed, and then sometimes lives vicariously through others – celebrities. This helps explains why an entire industry has been built around celebrity worship. It may be interesting to study whether there is a correlation between success and celebrity interest.

In 1996, Congress approved the Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as a legal union of one man and one woman. The federal law said that no state has to treat the union of people of the same sex as a marriage even if it is recognized as such in other states. There have been several challenges to the measure which has now been declared unconstitutional by a federal judge in Massachusetts.

The judge in the case has ruled that gay and lesbian couples should be granted the same rights as heterosexual couples including federal benefits like Social Security. Massachusetts is a state that allows gay marriage and the court there has ruled that couples which have been legally wed should not be discriminated against in any way. The Justice Department is expected to appeal the ruling but this case has reignited the debate across the United States.

It is not clear exactly where President Obama stands on the issue of gay marriage and there is a possibility that he could let the federal judges opinion stand opening the door to same sex marriage all across the country. Experts compare it to a court ruling in the sixties that cleared the way for interracial marriage. In the past, the President has said that because of his religious beliefs he opposes gay marriage but would support the civil union of same sex couples which would qualify their partners for employment benefits. He did not support the Defense of Marriage Act when he was in the Congress and the White House web site says he would like to see the measure repealed. Obama believes that gay couples should be able to enjoy the same legal rights and privileges as couples who are legally married. He also has been a supporter in the past of laws that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Regardless of your opinion of the generation ahead of you (or the one behind you), long-term assisted living contributes to a better society. More than one person in the world who is not a senior citizen has needed assistance, either within or outside of the home.

In 2000, it was estimated that 10 million Americans needed long-term care. However, only 63% of that 10 million were 65 or older. The remaining 37% (or 3.7 million people) were 64 or younger. This means that a large number of individuals who are not elderly do indeed need care because they have become disabled in at least two activities of daily living.

Furthermore, it is estimated that the number of people who will need long-term help, either at home or with residential care via assisted living or a nursing home, will double from 10 million in 2000 to over 20 million by 2050. The majority of these people are expected to be senior citizens who live longer due to their healthier lifestyles.

Does assisted living contribute to a better society? Or is it a drain on the resources of the elderly and their children? Is it a great way for people to invest money in a manner that helps those who need it? Given the rising numbers of elderly and disabled in this country, it would seem that establishing a system of support can do nothing but contribute to a better society. Taking care of the old and weak, or in this case, those who are older and struggling, is an honorable goal for any culture.

Right now, there are 253 Democrats in the house to 177 Republicans. For the GOP to take charge they would have to hold onto all the seats they currently hold and gain 39 more to have the majority. There have been a number of times in U.S. history where the party of the President lost the mid-term elections and the experts say it is possible now but not likely. House Republican leaders are predicting gains of 70 seats or more but political pundits say that is unrealistic even with the current anti-incumbent sentiment.

There is one race in Ohio that is being watched closely because it could signal what happens across the country. Democratic Congressman Steve Driehaus is being challenged in the 1st district by the former Congressman that he defeated in 2008. Republican Steve Chabot had held the seat for 16 years and wants it back. The polls show that Chabot is ahead any may win a return to Capitol Hill.

If the mid-term elections are a referendum on the policies of President Obama, the Democratic Party could be in trouble.
An ABC News poll shows the popularity of the President has slipped and it found that 51% of the people asked would like to see the Republicans control Congress while only 43% said they want the Democrats to remain in charge.

Some parents fail to understand that raising kids isn’t as easy as buying car insurance, where you select one and simply pay for it on a monthly basis. Raising kids takes much more effort than a monthly allowance. If parents and society fail to reverse the trend of placing children on the back burner, both nations may face generations of children growing into discontented adults. One solution may be to teach children how to parent. Kids would gain better parenting skills and the desire to focus on the family in order to raise healthy and happy children.

There are several contributing factors for the decline in nurturing children. The first is a demographic shift. In 1960, five out of 10 American households had young children. In 2010, only three out of 10 have young children. As people live longer and adults wait until later in life to have children, this number may further decline. With the shifting demographics, raising kids may be less of a common community concern because few people in a neighborhood have children to raise.

A second reason may be a shift in the goals for marriage. Earlier generations viewed marriage as a stable environment for raising children. Today’s young couples view marriage as a way to fulfill a deep desire for intimacy, companionship, and personal fulfillment. Children require time and attention, which can reduce the level of fulfillment a couple feels.

The popularity of the President is falling and experts believe it is because he has not delivered on a promise to create new jobs. A new Washington Post/ABC News poll reveals that 60% of the people asked do not believe the President will make the right decisions for the country. This poll shows a big switch from just a year ago when he had a much more favorable rating. When it comes to the economy, only 43% of those surveyed approved of the job he is doing.

This poll shows a growing dissatisfaction with all people in power. A majority of those asked also lack confidence in democratic and republican lawmakers in Congress to cure the nations problems. Only one fourth of the people polled say they plan to vote again for their representative in Congress with the others saying they would be inclined to support someone else. The anti-incumbent sentiment could lead to a major shift in the balance of power in Washington this fall if Republicans can take back control of the House and Senate.

Driving all the discontent is an unemployment rate around ten percent and a slow economy that has not recovered yet from the recession. Consumer confidence is low and until new jobs are created in greater numbers, it is not expected to get any better. While the President’s popularity is sliding, it should be pointed out that his poll numbers are close to those of President Clinton and President Reagan two years into their first terms. They were both able to bounce back and win reelection despite the low approval ratings. President Obama will be able to do the same if the economy recovers from the recession as expected. However, it could be tougher for the President to get his plans through Congress if the Democratic majority goes away in November.

It took three Republicans from New Jersey to cross the aisle and join the Democrats in the Senate to give the President the votes he needed to pass the bill and make it filibuster proof. The fight over reform has been a difficult one with the two political parties finding themselves once again on the opposite side of the issue. The Democrats say new reforms are absolutely necessary to make sure that the financial industry is never in a situation like the one a few years ago which required a massive taxpayer bailout. Republicans maintain that the new rules are not necessary and will only make the cost of borrowing money more expensive.

Republican leaders are worried that the bill will make the current financial crisis worse. They fear the impact of new regulations on community banks which provide loans to small businesses. They say they are opposing the regulations because of the negative impact it will have on the ability by business owners to get credit to create new jobs. Democratic leaders argue that the Republicans are just out to protect the special interest groups that they rely on for large donations.

Supporters say a key feature of the reform bill will be new stress tests required of big banking companies to try and identify any potential problems before they get so large that they threaten the future of the banking company. A new agency, the Financial Services Oversight Council will watch over the bank regulators to make sure that they are doing their job.

The stimulus package designed to boost the economy included over $7 billion to extend broadband service into parts of the United States that are still depending on dial-up Internet access. The plan calls for the installation of millions of miles of fiber optic cable and it is now underway.

Among the first areas to enjoy the high speed service are parts of Alaska and Kansas and the reviews have all been very positive. Doctors and small business owners have hailed the new service and say it has dramatically changed how they operate. The hope is that it will lead to expansion of services and new jobs. About 200 projects have been approved so far, with many more to come before the deadline of September 2010 to give out all of the money. The chairman of the F.C.C. says this work is just as significant as efforts to wire rural parts of the country for electric back during the 20^th Century.

The project has not come without the critics though with conservatives on Capitol Hill questioning why the government is subsidizing the broadband companies who will profit from this. The Republicans will argue that federal spending is already out of control and needs to be reigned in. These lawmakers question whether the $7 billion dollar investment will actually create jobs and give the economy a boost.

Some of the opponents were pushing for tax credits for small business owners to do as they wished with the money. If they felt that high speed Internet access was a priority, they could have used the money for that. However, if that is not a priority then the businesses could have used the stimulus funds in other ways to expand and create new jobs. Now, they have no choice.

Fertility doctors say Dr. Kamrava has given everyone in their profession a black eye for operating so recklessly. Kamrava is now facing the loss of his license to practice medicine and many of his critics say that cannot happen soon enough. This latest case occurred after “Octomom” made national headlines and attracted the attention of lawmakers on Capitol Hill who have been considering tighter regulations against the fertility industry. The issue has been hotly debated because of the dispute over when life begins, at birth or at conception.

Georgia was one of the first states to try and use the “Octomom’s” case to try and change the law to limit how many embryos could be implanted by fertility doctors and that proposal was met by widespread opposition. Critics called it an excuse to pass an anti-abortion measure and argued that the process should not be subject to arbitrary rules because each individual case can be difficult. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine has adopted industry guidelines for fertility doctors which they recommend be followed. The organization says the number to be implanted depends on the age of the mother and they recommend a maximum of 5 embryos for women over 40 who are expected to run into the greatest difficulty of carrying a child to full term. A healthy young woman attempting the procedure should have no more than two embryos implanted according to the group.

The NAACP wasted no time in going after the tea party group encouraging it to combat bigotry and not to tolerate bigoted statements. Former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been the most vocal of the political leaders standing up for the tea party. On her Facebook page, Palin writes that she knows how it feels to be falsely accused and says “the honest, freedom-loving patriots of the Tea Party movement are truly undeserving.”

There have been other examples of possibly racist behavior attributed to members of the tea party movement. There was the famous use of the N-word aimed at black members of Congress during the health care debate and what some have termed offensive signs at tea party rallies. There are those who believe the tea party is just the KKK re-branded but that type of rhetoric has no place in the debate according to most of the people on both sides of the issue. Tea party leaders say that when people promoting bigotry are found within their ranks they are kicked out. Even the head of the NAACP is quick to point out that they don’t believe the whole group is racist just that some followers have exhibited racist behavior.

President Obama is calling on Congress to approve the Paycheck Fairness Act. This is a measure that is very similar to one that was proposed a few years back that makes it easier for women to sue if men in the office are getting more money for the same work. Government statistics have found that women typically make about 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man in a similar position.

Supporters of the measure say women now make up 50% of the workforce and believe it is time to finally achieve true pay equality. The last major piece of legislation in this area was adopted in 1963 and those who back the Paycheck Fairness Act say it is time for an update. The biggest source of contention is helping women find out if they are being underpaid and the new rules would open access to financial records. It would also strengthen the penalties for companies which are not following the law.

The American Association of University Women has done a study to show that over the course of a career, the pay inequities will cost the typical female executive over $700,000. The study also shows that retirement benefits for women are impacted because those are based on the money earned while working. The group says the arguments that women are paid less because they take time off for child bearing or fail to work as many hours as men are not true.

Opponents of the Paycheck Fairness Act include organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It doesn’t think it is fair to force companies to publicize worker salaries and questions how comparable work would be defined. They also object to provisions in the bill which lift current limits on the amount of jury awards in cases that involve sex discrimination in the workplace.

It was Quinnipiac University that was trying to convince the judge that competitive cheering should be considered as an officially recognized sport. The school was looking to get rid of volleyball and institute cheering as a school sanctioned sport instead for budget reasons and it was the volleyballers who sued. They did not think it was fair that their sport would be eliminated.

A number of schools have been struggling to follow government rules to be in compliance with Title XI. Title XI was adopted in 1972 requiring that equal opportunities be provided to men and women in athletics. The rules mean that an equal number of scholarships must be offered to students of each sex and schools have been left scrambling to find more opportunities for female athletes. Quinnipiac University thought cheerleading would be a perfect way to meet the requirements until the judge blocked the effort.

To qualify as a sport the law says it must have a defined season, formal practices and and competitions. The problem with cheerleading according to the judge is that competing against other schools is not necessarily the main goal since the participants activities are more in support of other teams. There is likely to be an appeal of the case. The national group that runs competitions for cheer squads is calling this just a minor setback and believes eventually cheerleading will be a fully sanctioned intercollegiate sport.

As North Korea continues to ignore warnings from the United States over development of nuclear weapons, it appears new sanctions are on the way to force the communist country to comply. The United States Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State both have outlined plans to force North Korea to tow the line in a visit to neighboring South Korea. The new sanctions will attempt to cut off the supply of weapons to North Korea and block the country from importing a number of luxury items.

The latest sanctions follow the attack by North Korea on a South Korean ship that killed 46 sailors. Democrats and Republicans alike in Washington condemned the attack and called on the Obama Administration to draft an appropriate response. The announcement of sanctions included another warning that if the attacks by North Korea continue there will be even more serious consequences in the future.

The United States is planning naval drills in the waters near North Korea to reinforce the message that future attacks will not be tolerated. The exercises though have North Korea accusing the U.S. of being the one to threaten the safety of the people in the region. The North says if the U.S. was really interested in peace it would halt the military exercises and China is backing up North Korea in this controversy.

A summit meeting of Asian countries is planned to try and resolve the dispute but most of the participants acknowledge that there is no simple solution. Western leaders are convinced that North Korea is trying to develop nuclear weapons that could cause mass destruction. North Korea has conducted a series of nuke tests which have made the neighboring countries very nervous but the North says the weapons would only be used to defend itself.

One day she was forced to quit, the next she was offered an even better new job working once again for the Agriculture Department. Conservative and liberal groups alike are coming under fire over the treatment of Shirley Sherrod who up until this week was a long time government employee.

The controversy all started with a posting on a conservative web site linked to the Tea Party movement. The post included a clip from a speech Sherrod gave to the NAACP which was taken out of context. She admits in the clip that in the past she may not have worked as hard to help white families as she did blacks but the clip does not include the rest of her speech in which she says she learned that being poor is not confined to one race or the other. She found many white families in need of help and worked to save their farms. In fact, one of the first families to come to her defense was an elderly white couple in Georgia who credits Sherrod with keeping them in business.

After the short clip appeared on the Tea Party site, there was a firestorm of reaction from across the country. The NAACP criticized Sherrod and the Secretary of Agriculture forced her to resign without investigating the circumstances around the comment. Both have now retracted their criticism and Sherrod has been offered a new job with the government. Secretary Tom Vilsack has offered an official apology to Sherrod saying he regrets having made the decision to fire her in haste before knowing the full story.

Political experts say this story is typical of the type of over reaction caused by the fast spread of information over the Internet. One Republican Congressman has said that the way to get the country back on track is to go back to the policies of the past that promoted free enterprise instead of diminishing it. The health care reform bill approved by Congress means that insurance companies across America are now required to pay the full cost for preventive treatments and screenings aimed at warding off disease. New rules worked out by the administration of President Obama dictate that preventive health care be available without any copays or deductibles. The reform bill has also required Medicare to provide preventive screenings at no cost to seniors.

There are four sets of services that the government says must be provided free of charge. If groups that oppose abortion have their way, the nomination of Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court will never come up for a vote. Kagan’s nomination has been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee but before it is voted on by the full senate, opponents are calling for a filibuster. Demonstrators have been protesting outside the offices of several conservative lawmakers like Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell. They are demanding that the Republican lead the fight against her.

The protesters include Randall Terry of Operation Rescue who believes that Kagan will vote with abortion rights activists even though she has never made her position on abortion clear. Terry has been quoted as saying that Kagan is ” committed to killing children at all costs.” He and others in the movement believe that members of the Republican party are afraid to stand up to the pro-choice forces on capitol hill and they have been protesting to try and force some action.

The current position of the Supreme Court is in favor of abortion by a slim 5 to 4 majority and the departure of Justice John Paul Stephens leaves the justices evenly divided. If it turns out that Kagan is pro-choice as most experts believe then the current majority would remain in tact but if she is not, a number of past decisions could be overturned. One thing that has the pro-choice side concerned is her support for a compromise over a ban on late term abortions when she worked for then President Clinton but that was seen as more of a political move than a philosophical one.

At her confirmation hearings, Kagan refused to say how she might rule on any potential cases coming before the court including abortion. The only way to know for sure will be to read her opinions if the Senate determines that she is fit to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

There has been a great debate going on in Washington over extending unemployment benefits for those out of work. The current law allows for six months of payments for people who have been laid off and Congress has agreed in the past to extend those benefits for up to a year but no more. The latest attempt to extend jobless benefits was rejected just before Congress left on a summer recess and the future of the program is in great doubt.

There is not that much disagreement between democrats and republicans over whether the added benefits are deserved, most agree that they are. Republican lawmakers have been insisting that the extended benefits be fully funded so that the federal deficit does not get any bigger, it is currently at $1.3 trillion. Democrats say the issue is too important to add any conditions to the measure and want it adopted on it’s own merit as it has been several times since 2008. The debate has left both parties blaming the other for the delays.

Complicating the issue is a growing number of people who believe that unemployment benefits should not be extended at all. They argue that 26 weeks of benefits are more than enough to help people who lose their jobs find another position. Extending benefits any longer, some say, only encourages people out of work to stay home and collect a check from the government. The argument goes that there is no incentive for them to find work until they know that the government benefits are about to run out. Between state and federal benefits, people out of work can in some cases still get paid for up to 99 weeks before there is not any cash coming in.

When Congress was first asked to approve large tax credits for first time home buyers there was agreement among democrats and republicans that they were necessary. The housing industry was slumping badly and something needed to be done to give it a shot in the arm. The credit of up to $8,000 made buying a home more affordable for thousands of Americans and did give the economy a boost until the credits ran out. Now may be the time to offer them again.

In the early months of 2009, thanks to the tax credit and low mortgage rates home sales rallied. The length of time that a home for sale sat on the market was reduced and more people were once again able to achieve the American dream of owning their own home. The credits ran out at the end of April and that is when home sales came to a screeching halt. A dramatic decline in the sale of existing homes was reported along with a big dip in the sale of new homes. The expiration of the tax credit is seen as the chief reason why.

When Congress returns from the summer recess, they will be asked to reinstate the tax credits. Intense lobbying is expected on behalf of both the National Association of Realtors and the Home Builders Association which are desperately looking for ways to spark sales. They say if the housing industry is to lead the nation out of recession than they need additional federal help. However, opponents have been arguing that the government cannot afford any more give-a-way programs because the federal deficit is already too large and they do not want to see the federal government go any deeper into debt. The vote is certainly expected to be close as lawmakers choose sides in this fight.

June was the bloodiest month for U.S. forces in the war in Afghanistan. As the casualties mount, there is growing concern that the war there may not be winnable. President Obama has made Afghanistan ground zero in the war on terror and remains committed to the effort despite growing opposition. He has made a command change on the ground in Afghanistan to try and reverse the course.

The new commander is General David Petraeus who was quickly confirmed by democrats and republicans alike in the Congress. Petraeus has promised first to review the rules of engagement for U.S. forces which some say have put American soldiers at risk. To try and limit civilian casualties, U.S. forces have been under orders to only return fire when they can clearly identify the gunman responsible for the attack. Often times, this is very difficult to determine because the soldiers are being ambushed at night. Many of the 59 Americans who were killed in Afghanistan in June died in this type of encounter and 58 others were killed in fighting in May.

Critics of the war say the situation on the ground in Afghanistan should be improving for U.S. forces and not getting worse.
President Obama committed an extra 30,000 troops to the effort last year but they have not been able to stop the violence which continues to escalate. The President says he will start pulling troops out of Afghanistan by this time next year but unless dramatic gains can be made soon that may not be possible. General Petraeus says he supports the draw down date and will work to secure the country. Whether he will give soldiers more discretion to defend themselves from attack remains to be seen. They have been told to never fire the first shot even if they feel that an attack is imminent.
